Paint bucket
Hi all,

I want to ask you what would be the best way of modelling a paint spilt around sides of can - i want it to look pretty good as it's going to be very close shot. It's for one of our graphic designers - I think it a theme for an invitation or something...Anyway please see picture that explains it all..

Thank you

Jana

Jana, that's a tough one. I suppose one way would be to use the "melt" modifier on a cylinder or sphere, etc, to create the puddle at the bottom. Thats what I did in the attached test image. Then converted the puddle to an editable poly and extruded it up the can and over the top.

You may not need/want to extrude it upwards, and just use a painted bump map on the can?

I know there are other ways, but I thought this would be the easiest without having to fuss with particles, or blobmesh, simulators, etc...although the cloth or even hair simulator might even work well here.

As usual, there's a number of ways to skin this cat...just depends on which method works best for you.

Thanks Jeff, I used half of your idea (as the second part was nearly finished), the melt modifier. I nearly forgot that it is there....So I used that for yje paint splashes on the ground. For the paint on the bucket, I draw a spline in front view in a shape of a leaking paint, extruded just a little, bend modifier - so it follows the shape of a tin, edit mesh modifier - tessalated the surface, and then selected some of the vertices and with soft selection moved them up slightly, and finaly used turbosmooth modifer.....bit complicated but I think it worked.....
